“With Incursion giving us glimpses of what Incarna will have to offer (the the Character Creator), this month’s topic, by @Minerpewpew, comes just at the right time. He asks “What are your thoughts on how Incarna will effect the current EVE Online social dynamic?” I’d like to see this questioning go a bit further. How will this affect EVE’s player base? Who will Incarna attract? New players to the genre? Seduce old players back into the game? Will we see new players come in that will never leave their station? Please explore to the best of your abilities!”
EVE is something more than just a community of players. In many respects it is a society – a collection of communities. These communities can all be described in various ways, from the blogging community, to the pirate, mercenary, industrial, market, or mission running community. As in reality players may exist or straddle across these typical groups or exist within sub divisions – for example the null sec pirate community vs the low sec pirate community. For the most part this society has been largely unchanged through EVEs evolution with the notable exception of the introduction of Wormhole Space.
Incarna will once again change the face of EVE’s society introducing no doubt new ‘professions’ or reinforcing existing ones by making them more attractive. But why do I think that will be the case….?
Who do you see here? An old man? A slave, or a master? A diplomat perhaps, or a fleet commander? Perhaps more importantly do you like this person – would you join his corp if he asked you too? Would you agree to a trade, or accept his offer as a mercenary? How would your views differ say if you met this fellow? >>>>
Same bloodline, in fact I’ve made only some subtle alterations to the basic face here -changing his eye colour, a slightly younger visage with less scaring. Oh and I got rid of the comedy eye brows. The thing is, is that instinctively your reaction will change, perhaps only in a limited fashion but there will be a slight modification to how you might respond to either persona – it is simply a natural trait we all have.
Our minds notice, essentially subconsciously, facial elements like symmetry and proportion. Uncommon, or unusual features may appear slightly comical or even repulsive. Until now EVE has never had to factor this into its already complex web of interactions – EVE “personalities” are largely determined solely by their actions, either in game or on the forums / blogosphere. To date the only visual impact have been some rather generic and ill defined cartoon like avatars and our ships.
With Incarna all of this could change. Consider for a moment the impact a more fully realised character portrait can have. Eyes, expression, hair style all creating an impression others will relate and / or react to. Now with this in mind consider that avatar moving, expressions changing, mannerisms, posture, gestures. The effects of this will of course not be uniformly felt everywhere, nor will they be so significant that they will be immediately obvious but by degrees they will occur. One day in EVE someone will violence your boat for no other reason than, to quote a phrase “you looked at ’em funny”.
